It’s over, Barbie! Ken doesn’t date girls who are into deforestation.
Barbie’s on the rampage. She’s trashing rainforests in Indonesia, including areas that are home to some of the world’s most endangered animals like Sumatran tigers, orang-utans and elephants, just so she can wrap herself in a pretty pink box. No wonder Ken’s thinks she’s a “fucking bitch”.
But Barbie wasn’t to know. Blame her maker Mattel, who is feeding this nasty habit by using paper packaging from one of Indonesia’s most notorious companies, Asia Pulp and Paper (APP).
Greenpeace have analysed the fibres in Barbie’s packaging and there’s a pretty strong smell of corruption that leads right to the carbon-rich forests and peatlands of Indonesia. The trail leads directly from Mattel to APP and its suppliers in a chain of destruction that spans the globe.
Barbie has been an aspirational figure for girls for 50 years. Of all the careers she’s dabbled in, with their accompanying wardrobe and accessories, maybe environmental activist is a path she might like to take. If she can mend her sorry ways, maybe Ken will take her back.
In the meantime, we can start by telling Mattel to stop destroying rainforests for its toy packaging.
